How To Answer “Tell Me About Yourself“ Interview Question

Tell me about yourself?

Most interviews start with this dreaded question.

In today’s post I will show you a proven three step formula to answer the interview question “tell me about yourself “.

1. Introduce Yourself

A great way to start your answer will be to introduce yourself. Provide the interviewer with an overview of your career/education.

The interviewer is not asking about your personal life. However it is important to talk about your values and if your family reflects your value then you should mention in a sentence or two maximum. A practical example:

“I am a recent graduate of Pharmacy. During my time at the university I was an account treasurer for the pharmacy society. This is how I developed my interest in book keeping and balancing accounts”. 

“I am a qualified pharmacist with over 5 years experience and extensive knowledge of the healthcare industry”. 

2. Highlight Your Experience and Skills

Now is the time to showcase your achievement and experience. Do not rehash your CV. Focus on two to three experiences and or skills that are relevant to the job you are interviewing for. For instance:

“My degree in pharmacy continuously developed my clinical knowledge and made me an expert in the respiratory field. Hence excellent at developing respiratory clinical care plans”.

“I have spent my time developing my skills as a community pharmacist and manager. Great at identifying best solutions to difficult situations”.  

3. Highlight Your Career Aspiration

You have introduced yourself and discussed about the skills you have acquired. Now is time to conclude with why you applied for the role.

“Having enjoyed a successful career thus far,I am now looking for a challenging and exciting position to grow and develop my leadership skill”. 

TIPS

1. Tailor your answer to reflect the job specifications.
2. Ensure your answers are not automated and robotic.
3. Do not speak quickly; remember to breathe.
