Depression is a common mental illness that affects most people at some point of their lives. It causes the feeling of sadness, loss of interest in activities and constant low mood. Various risk factors such as a difficult life event, an illness or social economic factors leads to depression. It is important to recognise signs and symptoms of depression and take necessary action in order to overcome depression. Here are the 5 ways to overcome depression.

1. Stay Connected

People experiencing depression sometimes mistake it to be a sign of weakness. As a result you stay away from family and avoid interacting with people. This in turn will leave you feeling lonely and deeper into depression. It is very important to stay in touch and talk to friends and family.

2. Stay Active

Exercise is proven to lift your mood, reduce your stress levels and even enhance the quality of sleep. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends about 3 sessions a week, lasting about 45 minutes to 1 hour, over 10 to 14 weeks exercise. If you are not physically active start with 20 minutes walk daily.

3. Self-Love

Do the things that make you happy, this will boost your self esteem. If you love going out for a meal do so. Maintain a healthy lifestyle, avoid drinking alcohol excessively this will heighten not only your positive feelings but also the negatives.

4. Psychological Therapies
